RESUMEN

Cigarette smoking has been considered a major public health concern due to its serious impact on health. However, smokers intending to quit may find long-term abstinence challenging. When smoking an electronic cigarette (EC), users can experience a sensation and taste similar to that of smoking a combustible cigarette. Therefore, manufacturers promote these products as a viable substitute for combustible cigarettes. However, several researchers report the serious health impacts experienced by EC users. Therefore, this review aims to examine the health impacts of EC use. Based on the findings of the research papers reported in the literature, the role of EC as a smoking cessation tool is unclear. Several researchers have also reported a significant association between EC usage among non-smokers at baseline and the future initiation of combustible cigarette smoking. EC use significantly impacts user health. The nicotine that is present in EC e-liquids can elevate blood pressure, resulting in blood vessel constriction and an increase in heart rate, ultimately leading the body to an ischemic condition, resulting in myocardial infarction (MI), stroke, and increased arterial stiffness. Researchers report a higher likelihood of prediabetes among EC users; its usage was associated with higher OR of having asthma attacks and higher OR of reporting depression and has an impact on birth outcomes among pregnant women. Men using EC are more likely to report erectile dysfunction than non-users. EC also has a significant impact on oral health, which includes periodontal diseases, mucosal lesions, irritation in the mouth and throat, reduced salivary flow, and an increased risk of developing cancer. The physical injury resulting from exploding EC is another health concern. The frequently burned areas included the hands, face, genitalia, and thighs. Marketers promote EC as an alternative to combustible cigarettes and a tool for quitting smoking. However, the Food and Drug Administration has not approved them for smoking cessation. EC can have a serious impact on the health of their users; hence, the findings of this paper have several implications, including the need for regulation of the sales and marketing of these products and educating the users on the impact of these products on their health and safety.

Removable partial dentures (RPDs) offer a broad range of aesthetics and restorative functions for partially edentulous patients. This systematic review examines patients' satisfaction rates and the factors that influence RPD satisfaction. This systematic review was conducted according to PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines and the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews. A systematic literature search was done on PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar using preset inclusion criteria. A total of 923 non-duplicate articles were screened, and 35 were included in this review. Among the included studies, RPDs generally exhibited high satisfaction rates, with reported rates ranging between 50% and 81%. Several factors influenced satisfaction. Age played a major role, with older adults expressing higher satisfaction. Gender differences were also noted, especially in appearance satisfaction where women were more satisfied with RPDs than men. Prior experience with RPDs correlated positively with overall satisfaction. The number and location of missing teeth, as well as the type of RPD (metal vs. flexible), significantly influenced satisfaction levels. Flexible dentures were more satisfactory than metal RPDs. Attachments, such as magnetic attachments and implants, increased satisfaction. Patient complaints, encompassing pain, aesthetics, and cleanliness, were identified as common sources of dissatisfaction. The results underscore the significance of customizing RPD treatment to individual needs, considering factors that influence RPD satisfaction. Recognizing the importance of influential factors such as age, gender RPD experience, etc., for clinicians seeking to optimize patient outcomes in RPD therapy is crucial.

BACKGROUND: The Syrian conflict has had a negative impact on the psychological and overall health of adolescents. However, little is known about the oral health of those who are internally displaced. AIMS: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between mental health state and self-reported oral health and habits in Syrian adolescents. METHODS: A total of 99 adolescents living in Syria were included in the study. The participants were given four questionnaires: the International Trauma Questionnaire (ITQ), the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21), the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), and the World Health Organization (WHO) Oral Health Questionnaire for Children (2013). The relationship between self-reported oral and mental health was evaluated. RESULTS: Adolescents with symptoms of mental disturbances or abnormal sleep conditions were statistically more likely to self-report the health of their teeth and gums as below average, less likely to brush their teeth regularly, and reported more frequent smoking (p<0.05). Moreover, symptoms of mental disturbances and abnormal sleep conditions were statistically more likely in adolescents living in rural areas and whose parents' education did not exceed secondary school (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: Syrian adolescents reported mental disturbances, which were reflected in their poor oral health and habits. These findings confirm the need for psychiatric and oral health care programs for Syrians who remain in areas of conflict.

Background and objectives Recently, both surgical and non-surgical interventions have gained popularity in accelerating orthodontic tooth movement, but there is no randomized controlled trial (RCT) comparing both modalities in terms of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) during maxillary canine retraction. Therefore, this trial aimed to assess the PROMs associated with either low-level laser therapy (LLLT) or piezocision-assisted acceleration in the context of maxillary canine retraction. Materials and methods This was a single-blinded, single-center, three-arm RCT. A total of 54 patients (12 males, 42 females, mean age 20.65 ± 2.85) whose treatment needed upper-first-premolar extraction to facilitate canine retraction were enrolled and randomly divided into three groups: piezocision group (PG), LLLT group (LLLTG), and the control group (CG). Standardized questionnaires using a visual analog scale were distributed to patients at five assessment times: 1 (T1), 3 (T2), 7 (T3), 14 (T4), and 28 days following the canine retraction initiation (T5). The patients' pain, discomfort, swelling, chewing difficulty, satisfaction, and acceptance were recorded. Results Regarding pain and discomfort, the levels were significantly lower in the LLLTG during the first two weeks of canine retraction compared to the other two groups (p<0.017). At the same time, these levels were significantly greater in the PG than the CG in the first week of canine retraction (p<0.017). Patients in the PG had a "mild to moderate" perception of swelling at T1 and T2, which was significantly different than that of the other two groups (p<0.001). Regarding chewing difficulty, the levels in the LLLTG were significantly lower than those in PG at the first three assessment times (p<0.017). Patients' satisfaction with canine speed was significantly greater in the intervention groups compared to the CG (p<0.001). In contrast, no statistically significant differences were found between the three groups regarding satisfaction with gum appearance surrounding the canine (p=0.061) and acceptance (p=0.125). Conclusion The LLLT-assisted canine retraction was associated with significantly lower negative patient-reported outcomes during the first two weeks of retraction than piezocision-assisted retraction. However, the levels of pain and discomfort were significantly greater in the piezocision-assisted retraction group than those in the conventional canine retraction group, which in turn were greater than those with the LLLT-assisted canine retraction group during the first week of retraction. Patient satisfaction and acceptance were high with both piezocision and LLLT interventions.

BACKGROUND: Students' learning results are influenced by the educational environment. The best learning environment is created when students are involved in the evaluation process of their education. The purpose of this study was to evaluate students' perceptions of their learning environment at King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences (KSAU-HS) in Riyadh using the Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM) instrument. METHODS: This observational cross-sectional study was conducted through an online questionnaire using the Arabic version of the DREEM tool. Students from six colleges at KSAU-HS Riyadh campus were asked to complete the questionnaire through emails. The study was carried out between November 2021 and April 2022. Descriptive statistics and inferential statistics were performed for DREEM as both a continuous (two-way ANOVA test) and categorical variable (Chi-squared and Monte-Carlo test). RESULTS: A total of 370 students completed the questionnaire. The overall DREEM score for the study was 125.88/200, with a standard deviation of 58.79. SSP items received the highest scores, while SAP items earned the lowest scores. The college and the academic level showed statistically significant differences in the DREEM overall score and the five subscales, whereas gender showed no significant difference. The college of pharmacy scored the highest total DREEM score (140.35 ± 27.75), and scored higher among the five subscales than both colleges of dentistry (114.13 ± 29.74) and medicine (113.87 ± 33.03). Students in their third year had the greatest overall DREEM score (132.23 ± 29.76), and scored higher in SPL, SPA and SSP compared to students in their sixth year, in which the total DREEM score was (111.65 ± 27.58). CONCLUSIONS: Students of KSAU-HS generally perceived the educational environment as having more positive than negative. The educational level and college differed significantly in the overall DREEM score and the five subscales. Junior students had better perception of the educational environment and they differed significantly in the SPL and SPA subscales. The faculty of pharmacy had higher scores in the overall DREEM and the five subsequent scales than colleges of dentistry and medicine. Further research is needed in order to optimize the educational environment by investigating different solutions.

Periapical lesions have been implicated in sinus-related complications, but the precise influence of anatomical variations in the posterior superior alveolar artery (PSAA) on mucosal thickening remains an uncharted aspect. The new AI tool employed in this research utilizes advanced image processing algorithms to enhance image visualization. Background and Objectives: This study examines the accuracy of a new cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) software (eVol DXS, version 1.0.1.0) employing AI to detect the PSAA's location and the effect of that on maxillary sinus thickening in the presence of periapical lesions. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study included 120 CBCT cases with posterior maxillary periapical lesions and 120 without odontogenic infections. Teeth with proximity (<2 mm) to the sinus were excluded in both groups to eliminate the sinus floor's perforation effect. Both the PSAA locations and maxillary sinus thickening were classified and compared. Results: The mucosal thickening differs significantly (p < 0.001) between the study group and the control group. The study showed that an increased sinus thickness occurred when the PSAA was beneath the sinus membrane in the study group (62.5% compared to 8.6%; p < 0.001 *). The AI tool helped to achieve a 100% identification rate in determining the PSAA locations. Conclusions: AI algorithms for PSAA localization, which affects mucosal thickness in response to periapical lesions, yield excellent results.

(1) Background: This study aimed to compare patient-reported outcome measures when accelerating en masse retraction between the piezocision procedure and the subsequent application of low-level laser therapy (FC+LLLT), with the piezocision alone (FC), and in a control group. (2) Methods: A three-arm randomized controlled trial (RCT) was conducted involving 60 patients (41 females and 19 males) with Class II division I malocclusion. The en masse retraction was performed using NiTi closed coil springs attached to miniscrews. The LLLT was performed using an 808 nm Ga-Al-As diode laser. Patient responses regarding pain, discomfort, swelling, and chewing difficulties were reported at ten assessment points. (3) Results: The greatest pain levels were observed 24 h after the application of force during the first and third months of retraction. The mean pain, discomfort, swelling, and chewing difficulties were significantly smaller in the control group than in the FC and FC+LLLT groups. High satisfaction levels were reported in all three groups (p < 0.05). (4) Conclusions: The accelerated en masse retraction via piezocision, followed by a small course of LLLT, was accompanied by significantly fewer pain, discomfort, and chewing difficulties than the control group. LLLT is a valuable addition to piezocision, with an improved patient experience.

Methods for retracting the anterior teeth are divided into frictional methods and non-frictional methods. However, evidence regarding the superiority of one technique over the other is still lacking in the available literature. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the current evidence regarding the effectiveness of frictional methods of anterior teeth retraction compared to the non-frictional ones. The extracted data included the mechanism of application of the retraction force and its intensity, the observation period, follow-up records, and outcome measures. Ten studies were included in this review; the results did not favor a specific technique regarding the rate of orthodontic tooth movement and loss of anchorage during canine retraction, although a preference was shown for the sliding technique in the rate of en-masse retraction (0.74 versus 0.39 mm/month) and the anchorage control during the retraction of the incisors (0.5 versus 0.1 mm/month). The control of the incisor's torque during the en-masse retraction was higher when frictionless techniques were used (-12° versus -7°). Regarding the rate of orthodontic tooth movement, the non-frictional technique is characterized by a high sensitivity to the quality of the design, and the sliding technique was generally effective. As for controlling the torque of the incisors, the preference is for the non-frictional technique. Overall, there is a need to conduct more studies with an appropriate design.

BACKGROUND: There are several significant gaps in current studies of the relationship between anti-cancer medications and orthodontic care that call for more investigation. As a result, the main goals of this systematic review and meta-analysis were to summarise and assess the information that was available regarding the effect of radiotherapy and anti-cancer medications on the overall successful completion of an orthodontic treatment plan. METHODS: A standardised data extraction form was devised in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis, with specific criteria implemented for selecting studies with low to moderate risk of bias. RESULTS: Five studies involving different methodologies were selected at the conclusion of the search strategy. The statistical analysis revealed an estimated odds ratio (OR) of 0.31 and relative risk (RR) of 0.48, indicating a statistically significant association between the use of radiotherapy and anti-neoplastic drugs and a noticeable reduction in the successful completion of orthodontic treatment. The heterogeneity analysis showed significant heterogeneity among the studies. CONCLUSIONS: This review emphasises that, although orthodontic therapies can still be beneficial for children receiving chemotherapy, the effectiveness of the therapy may be diminished in older populations. The findings further highlight how crucial it is to take cancer therapies into account when planning and managing orthodontic treatment in order to optimise results and reduce problems.

Understanding tooth-size discrepancy is essential in the process of diagnosis of maxillary and mandibular relationship. Due to the high incidence of tooth-size disproportion, Practitioners should consider the high incidence of tooth-size disproportion when planning treatment for their patients, as in many cases, this can be a hindrance to obtaining an ideal result. This study aimed to determine the anterior and overall tooth ratios in the Saudi population and compare them with Bolton's standards. A total of 356 patients were recruited. For the anterior ratio, around 25% of the patients had a ratio equal to Bolton's standards (77.2%). Most subjects (53.7%) had a ratio above 77.2%, and the remaining (20%) had a ratio below 77.2%. The mean amount of anterior mandibular excess was 2.17 ± 2.12 mm, and the mean amount of anterior maxillary excess was 2.16 ± 2.08 mm. For the overall ratio, less than half of the participants (43%) had a ratio equal to Bolton's standards (91.3%). Almost 34% had a ratio above 91.3%, while 23% of the participants had a ratio below 91.3%. The mean amount of overall mandibular excess was 2.54 ± 2.37 mm, and the mean amount of overall maxillary excess was 3.31 ± 3.33 mm. The majority of the study sample had an overall and anterior Bolton ratio that is different from the norms of Bolton's standards, with a tendency for increased overall and anterior ratios. Having specific standards for the Saudi population is important for better clinical assessment and treatment outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training is important for students of health professions to learn and be prepared to perform. Colleges have a responsibility to provide adequate training for their students to ensure that they are ready and confident to deal with life-threatening situations. However, studies have shown that some graduates and practitioners lack sufficient knowledge in performing CPR. The aim of this study is to assess the knowledge of health professions students in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) who have started clinical practice.  Methodology: This cross-sectional study was conducted in February 2022 and included health professions students in all academic years, including interns and residents, across colleges of King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences, Riyadh, KSA. The study questionnaire consisted of three sections: attitudes, knowledge, and demographics. The attitudes section included 11 questions, while the knowledge section included 10. The demographic section included university level, Grade Point Average (GPA), CPR training status, willingness to learn CPR, witnessing CPR, and family history of cardiac disease. Statistical analysis was conducted using chi-squared tests, t-tests, two-sample proportion tests, ANOVA, and bivariate correlation analyses. RESULTS: The mean age of the participants was 21.2 (±1.9) years. Participants had a mean knowledge score of 5.1 (±1.8) out of 10 potential points. Also, the participants had a total attitude score of 42.7 (±6.2) out of 55 potential points. CONCLUSION: The study highlights the importance of CPR training for healthcare providers and the need for ongoing training to maintain knowledge and skills. The results suggest that attitudes towards providing CPR may be influenced by cultural beliefs and fear of liability or disease transmission. Higher participant GPA and positive attitudes towards chest compressions and CPR training were found to be associated with increased knowledge.

The literature on the impact of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) on orthodontic management or vice versa lacks clarity. This study presents a review that aims to evaluate the influence of TMDs on orthodontic management and explore the association between TMDs and various aspects of orthodontic treatment. A systematic search was conducted across multiple databases to identify relevant articles documenting the correlation between TMD incidence and orthodontic treatment to achieve the objectives. The selection process followed predefined criteria, and the selected studies underwent bias assessment using the AXIS tool and Cochrane risk of bias (RoB) tool. Among the articles identified, nine studies were deemed suitable for inclusion in the review. The findings from the subsequent meta-analysis indicated a significant overall effect, suggesting that orthodontic treatment may increase the risk of developing TMD. Furthermore, the analysis revealed that patients with TMD had higher odds of experiencing orthodontic issues than those without TMD. Subgroup analysis further demonstrated that orthodontic treatment could have a negative impact on the psychological well-being of TMD patients, while its effect on TMD incidence was found to be negligible. The results highlight the need for additional research to gain a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms and develop appropriate interventions aimed at minimizing the risk of TMD in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment. Clinicians should be aware of TMD as a potential complication of orthodontic treatment and implement appropriate monitoring strategies.

INTRODUCTION: The traditional methods of deboning metal brackets exert excessive force, resulting in enamel scratches, fractures, and patient discomfort. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of using two intensity levels of a diode laser for debonding metallic orthodontic brackets as an alternative to the conventional debonding method. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty intact, extracted human premolar teeth were used in this study, and metal orthodontic brackets were bonded to the buccal surface of these teeth. The teeth were divided into three groups for the experiment: (1) the control group, where conventional bracket debonding was performed using a debonding plier, (2) the first experimental group, where a diode laser (2.5W, 980nm) was utilized for laser debonding, and (3) the second experimental group, where a diode laser (5W, 980nm) was used for laser debonding. The laser was applied using a sweeping movement for 5 seconds. After debonding, the adhesive remnant index (ARI), the lengths, and the frequency of enamel cracks were compared among the groups. Additionally, an increase in intra-pulpal temperature was measured. RESULTS: In all groups, there were no instances of enamel fractures. Laser debonding resulted in a significant reduction in both the frequency and length of newly formed enamel cracks compared to the conventional debonding method. The laser debonding group exhibited increases in intra-pulpal temperature of 2.37°C and 3.60°C in the second and third groups, respectively. These temperature increases were significantly lower than the threshold of 5.5°C. There were no significant differences observed in the ARI scores among the groups. CONCLUSION: With all debonding methods, an increase in the length and frequency of enamel cracks should be anticipated. However, laser-assisted debonding of metal brackets offers the advantage of reducing the risk of enamel damage while avoiding thermal damage to the pulp.

This study's aim is to determine the accuracy and precision of the bracket slot height in MBT 0.022″ ceramic brackets. Five brackets from 11 different systems (n = 55) were scanned using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). The slot height was measured at the face (external) and base (internal) of the slot. Data were analyzed using a One-Sample t-Test, and a Paired t-Test. The lowest external height was seen in OrthoCare Purity® at 0.02264″ (2.9%), and the greatest in TOC Ghost Advanced® at 0.02736″ (24.4%). The lowest internal height was seen in Forestadent Glam® at 0.02020″ (-8.2%), and the greatest in TOC Ghost Advanced® at 0.2547″ (15.8%). OrthoCare Purity® measurements corresponded most closely with the expected measurements. TP InVu® was found to be the most precise bracket for external height (range = 0.00043″) and American Orthodontics 20/40® for internal height (range = 0.00028″). In assessing slot geometry, all brackets demonstrated a higher mean external slot height compared to the internal measurements at the base of the bracket. Orthodontic bracket slots are larger than expected and slot parallelism was not observed in any bracket brand tested. Similarly, slot dimensions are imprecise where two 'identical' brackets have different slot sizes. The clinician should, therefore, assume that play is most likely higher than expected.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the levels of pain, discomfort, and functional impairment associated with the en-masse retraction of the upper anterior teeth when treating Class II division 1 malocclusion patients using traditional corticotomy or flapless corticotomy. In addition, an assessment of patients' satisfaction with the selected surgical intervention was undertaken at one-month post-operatively. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study sample comprised 40 patients with Class II division 1 malocclusion, randomly assigned to either the traditional corticotomy group (n=20) or the flapless corticotomy group (n=20). Patients underwent extraction of the maxillary first premolars, and orthodontic mini-screws were placed between the maxillary second premolars and the first molars for skeletal anchorage. An en-masse retraction was accomplished in both groups. Patients were asked to fill in a questionnaire at 24 hours (T1), four days (T2), seven days (T3), 14 days (T4), and 28 days (T5) after the surgical intervention using standardized questionnaires. Most questions were answered on a visual analog scale where zero scores meant the absence of pain, discomfort, or functional impairment, and 100 scores meant the worst feelings of these traits. RESULTS: All patients in both groups entered data analysis with no dropouts. All measured levels were significantly greater in the traditional corticotomy group during the first two weeks following the corticotomy intervention in terms of pain perception (P˂0.001), discomfort (P=0.004), and difficulty in chewing (P=0.015). Additionally, during the first week following corticotomy, levels of perception of discomfort (P˂0.001), difficulty in swallowing (P=0.001), and limitation of jaw movement (P˂0.001) were significantly greater in the traditional corticotomy group. Patient satisfaction, the recommendation to a friend, and acceptance of flapless corticotomy were significantly greater than traditional corticotomy (P=0.002, P=0.001, respectively). 78% of patients in the traditional corticotomy group considered it more discomfort than a tooth extraction, while 50% of patients in the flapless corticotomy group considered tooth extraction more discomfort, with a significant difference between the two groups (P=0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The levels of negative patients' reported outcomes were significantly smaller with flapless corticotomy than with traditional corticotomy. Traditional corticotomy was associated with mild to moderate levels of pain, swallowing difficulty, moderate levels of discomfort, chewing difficulty, and jaw movement limitation after 24 hours of the surgical procedure. In contrast, flapless corticotomy was less problematic and associated with mild pain, swelling, chewing difficulty, jaw movement limitation, and swallowing difficulty at the same assessment time. Patient satisfaction, acceptance, and recommendation to a friend were greater for flapless corticotomy than traditional intervention.

This study provides valuable insights into the cosmetic impact of orthodontic appliances on job-hiring prospects in Saudi Arabia. Both ceramic braces and clear aligners are considered cosmetic corrective devices compared to traditional metallic braces. This survey-based, cross-sectional study used two models, one male, and one female. Four standardized smiling frontal photographs were taken for each model: one without any appliance and three with different orthodontic appliances (i.e., metal braces, ceramic braces, and clear aligners). The photographs of each model were shown to potential employers, followed by three questions for each photo to assess the employers' views on the applicants' professionalism, communication skills, and the likelihood of being hired. The survey was distributed via an electronic questionnaire to employers in Saudi Arabia, collecting feedback from 189 participants. The sample was collected from October 2022 to February 2023. The models' scores while wearing metal and ceramic bracket appliances were significantly lower than when the models were wearing clear aligners or were not wearing any appliance in each domain. In conclusion, orthodontic appliances have cosmetic implications that affect job-hiring prospects, with a higher chance of being hired if the candidate does not have an orthodontic appliance.

BACKGROUND: Children's quality of life, academic performance, and future achievement can all be negatively affected by poor dental health. The present study aimed to assess the need for dental health services and the factors influencing their utilization using the Andersen health care utilization model among school children. METHODS: The current cross-sectional study was conducted among schoolchildren aged 13 to 15 in Bangalore, India (n = 1100). A questionnaire was developed using the concepts of the Andersen healthcare usage model. The parents of the children filled out the questionnaire. The factors were investigated using bivariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: About 78.1% of the children did not utilize dental health services. Regarding the reasons for not visiting a dentist, 65.8% said they did not have a dental problem, and 22.2% said they could not afford it. Bivariate analysis showed that age, gender, education level, occupation of the family's head of household, monthly family income, socioeconomic status, perceived oral health problems, accessibility of dental health facilities, and parental attitudes toward their children's oral health were significantly associated with using dental health services (p<0.05). Multiple regression analysis showed dental health service utilization was directly related to age (OR = 2.206), education, family size (OR = 1.33), and brushing frequency twice a day (OR = 1.575) with no significant relationship between distance to reach the dental facility, the number of dental visits, and socioeconomic status. CONCLUSION: Dental health service utilization was low in the past year. The age, number of family members, parent's education level, travel time to the dental facility, the child's oral health behaviors, and positive parental attitude all play a role in a children's utilization of dental health service.

Oral cancer (OC) is one of the most common forms of head and neck cancer and continues to have the lowest survival rates worldwide, even with advancements in research and therapy. The prognosis of OC has not significantly improved in recent years, presenting a persistent challenge in the biomedical field. In the field of oncology, artificial intelligence (AI) has seen rapid development, with notable successes being reported in recent times. This systematic review aimed to critically appraise the available evidence regarding the utilization of AI in the diagnosis, classification, and prediction of oral cancer (OC) using histopathological images. An electronic search of several databases, including PubMed, Scopus, Embase, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and the Saudi Digital Library, was conducted for articles published between January 2000 and January 2023. Nineteen articles that met the inclusion criteria were then subjected to critical analysis utilizing QUADAS-2, and the certainty of the evidence was assessed using the GRADE approach. AI models have been widely applied in diagnosing oral cancer, differentiating normal and malignant regions, predicting the survival of OC patients, and grading OC. The AI models used in these studies displayed an accuracy in a range from 89.47% to 100%, sensitivity from 97.76% to 99.26%, and specificity ranging from 92% to 99.42%. The models' abilities to diagnose, classify, and predict the occurrence of OC outperform existing clinical approaches. This demonstrates the potential for AI to deliver a superior level of precision and accuracy, helping pathologists significantly improve their diagnostic outcomes and reduce the probability of errors. Considering these advantages, regulatory bodies and policymakers should expedite the process of approval and marketing of these products for application in clinical scenarios.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Investigation into the impact of dental trauma on the results of orthodontic treatment is crucial because it can have a major influence on patient care. However, there has not yet been a thorough review or meta-analysis of the available data, which is inconsistent and scant. Therefore, the goal of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to investigate the impact of dental trauma on orthodontic parameters. Search methods and criterion of selection: Major online databases were searched (beginning from the year 2011) for relevant articles using a properly defined search strategy. Analysis protocol: Risk of bias (RoB) and the Cochrane risk of bias tool were utilized for the purposes of bias evaluation within the individual studies and within the review, respectively. RESULTS: Out of the six clinical trials selected, a significant impact of trauma was observed in individuals in all but one paper. Gender predilection varied across studies and could not be conclusively determined. The follow-up period ranged from two months to two years in the trials. The odds ratio (OR) 0.38 [0.19, 0.77] and the risk ratio (RR) 0.52 [0.32, 0.85] indicated that both the odds as well as the relative risk of experiencing dental trauma were lower in the group with negligible impact compared to the group with noticeable impact. Conclusion and further implications: The findings show that dental trauma significantly affects orthodontic parameters, with lower risk and likelihood of suffering dental trauma in the group with negligible impact than in the group with noticeable impact. However, given the substantial heterogeneity among the studies, it is advised to exercise caution when extrapolating the findings to all populations. Registration and protocol: Registration in the PROSPERO database was carried out before initiating the investigation [CRD42023407218].

Technological advancements in health sciences have led to enormous developments in artificial intelligence (AI) models designed for application in health sectors. This article aimed at reporting on the application and performances of AI models that have been designed for application in endodontics. Renowned online databases, primarily PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane and secondarily Google Scholar and the Saudi Digital Library, were accessed for articles relevant to the research question that were published from 1 January 2000 to 30 November 2022. In the last 5 years, there has been a significant increase in the number of articles reporting on AI models applied for endodontics. AI models have been developed for determining working length, vertical root fractures, root canal failures, root morphology, and thrust force and torque in canal preparation; detecting pulpal diseases; detecting and diagnosing periapical lesions; predicting postoperative pain, curative effect after treatment, and case difficulty; and segmenting pulp cavities. Most of the included studies (n = 21) were developed using convolutional neural networks. Among the included studies. datasets that were used were mostly cone-beam computed tomography images, followed by periapical radiographs and panoramic radiographs. Thirty-seven original research articles that fulfilled the eligibility criteria were critically assessed in accordance with QUADAS-2 guidelines, which revealed a low risk of bias in the patient selection domain in most of the studies (risk of bias: 90%; applicability: 70%). The certainty of the evidence was assessed using the GRADE approach. These models can be used as supplementary tools in clinical practice in order to expedite the clinical decision-making process and enhance the treatment modality and clinical operation.
